The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

This is the first year that Jack has been excited by Christmas, although he still doesn’t quite “get” it yet.  He loves to Santa, but doesn’t seem to get that Santa brings you presents and you have to be good for that to happen.  We got the Elf on the Shelf (which he named Elfvis) and he likes the Elf, but wants to play with him.  Poor Elfvis has no magic left, as Jack likes to grab him and make him fly around the room.

One thing that he does get and loves is Christmas lights!  He calls them “Crickmas yites” and they never cease to fascinate him.  Several of our neighbors have some up, and each time we pull out of the garage, he yells out in excitement “LOOK!  CRICKMAS YITES!”  over and over with each lit house we pass. Each time, it’s like he’s seeing them for the first time.  It’s adorable and a wonderful reminder of the wonder this season can hold.

We recently drove through the Chesapeake lights on Western, and goodness was that an adventure.  “CRICKMAS YITES!  MORE CRICKMAS YITES!  CRICKMAS YITES OVER DERE!”  Then, the lights started changing colors.  “It’s blue, mama.  It changed! It’s red, mama.  It’s green, mama.”  That boy knows his colors and had so much fun telling us all about the different lights.

It’s so fun to enjoy Christmas through a child’s eyes again.  I can only imagine what Christmas morning will be like, or Christmas in a year or two, when he fully grasps all the traditions and activities.  Magic!
